Repent of Your Sins and Believe in the Gospel

Jesus went into Galilee, where He preached God’s Good News.“The time promised by God has come at last!” He announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!” (Mark 1:14-15)

Who is Jesus Christ?

Jesus is fully God. The Bible teaches that there is only one God who eternally exists as three distinct Persons — the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is the Son of God, the second Person of the Trinity.

Jesus existed from the beginning. From the beginning, Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him, nothing was made that has been made (John 1:1-3). For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17). He is the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty (Revelation 1:8, 22:13).

Jesus is fully man but without sin. Although He existed in the form of God, He did not regard equality with God something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges by taking the form of a servant. He was born as a human being through the conception of a virgin by the Holy Spirit. When He was in the form of manHe was tempted in every way, just as we are — yet He did not sin. He was perfectly obedient to the Father and lived a holy life. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. He died and was buried but on the third day, He rose from the dead. The Lord Jesus Christ is victorious over sin and death!

Therefore God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the Name that is above every name, so that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:6-11)

What is God’s Good News?

The Good News (Gospel) is the fulfillment of God’s promise long ago through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures about His Son, Jesus Christ. It is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.

God is holy. Holy comes from a word which means “separate, apart, or cut off”. God is separate or cut off from everything that is sinful and evil. He does not take pleasure in wickedness; no evil dwells with Him (Psalm 5:4). He is without sin and cannot tolerate sin. God cannot have fellowship with anyone who does not have perfect righteousness.

Man is sinful. All of us have sinned. Whether minor or grave, in motive, thought, word or deed, all of us are guilty of committing sin. The Bible says: There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one (Romans 3:10-12). All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags. No amount of good living can merit favor from God because His standard is perfection, holiness — which is impossible for us to achieve. We all fall short of God’s standard of holiness. When we sinned against God we have become separated from God.

God is just. He punishes sin. The payment for sin is death (Romans 6:23). This death refers to spiritual death which means eternal separation from God. Instead of having an eternal relationship of love with God, we would be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might. This is the truth about man’s condition. We have sinned; therefore, we rightfully deserve God’s eternal wrath.

God is love. But because of God’s great love for us, He made a way so we can be reconciled back to Him. God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

Jesus, the Son of God, came into the world to seek and save the lost (sinners). He lived a holy life and sacrificed Himself as payment for our sins that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Those who believe in Jesus are not righteous in themselves, but God has put them in Christ. So when God looks at them, He sees Christ’s righteousness. Through God’s grace, we can be made holy and be reconciled back to God not because of ourselves but because of Jesus’ holiness.

Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News! (Mark 1:15)
